Having paid for both myself and a colleague in the pub this lunchtime, I asked for a receipt so I'd be better able to answer the inevitable question "how much do I owe?"

The receipt says:

2 Cola Pos WI SmGl 2.90
1 Gue 4.0-4.4 Pt 3.20
1 Gr. Brit Cod+Chi 8.95
1 MD LUN Stk+AlePi 6.99

The "Great British Cod and Chips" (as it appeared on the menu) is fairly easy to spot. The last item is my steak and ale pie, which was bought on the lunch deal (LUN?) I don't know if this is the Managing Director's LUNch deal, or a LUNch deal only available around MiDday. I considered it being a MeDium deal, but since their LUNch deal has four categories (and it is in the most expensive) I don't think that's a goer. Also, the plate of pie, mash and veg is chuffin' massive.

The SmGl in the first item confused me for some time - it wasn't a small glass, it was a pint! Eventually I noticed that there was two of it, so presumably anyone requesting a pint of soft drink is sold two halves. It was indeed cola (diet Pepsi, as it happens), but quite why it was supplied by the Womens' Institute is a mystery. Any ideas?

The remaining item is my pint of rather tasty Wai-Iti, which is a hoppy beer (with New Zealand hops, no less) brewed by Marston's. I highly recommend it if citrusy notes in your bitter appeal to you. After some thinking I have concluded that it is the Guest beer ("Gue") and they have a standard price per pint (Pt) of beer in the range 4-4.4% ABV.

I don't feel I should have to work quite so hard to decode my lunch, though :(

The 'Pos' in the Cola description is probably short for 'postmix'.

Yup, good call... if I can just sort the WI out we're done :)

(Logically, I feel that the "WI" ought to be an indication that it was diet cola, but I really can't justify that.)

Aha!

No, as it happens... I presume ice is the default, and they were specifically marking "Without Ice" on the order.

Pos WI? You sure it doesn't reckon you are possible women's institute? :-)

No, no, not Women's Institute...

...it is none other than my archenemy With Ice!

Actually, I think it is the order of all right-thinking people, Without Ice.

Oh dear, I had you two down as right-thinking people who understood the ceaseless quest for MOAR COLD in fizzy drinks.

Euch. No. In fact, if you could not chill my lemonade before you don't put ice in it, that'd be even better.

Right with you there on the ice and often agree on the chilling (outside summer)

WI = with ice?
And I translated the 4.0-4.4 as a % range before spotting it was probably short for guest - it makes sense though, you don't want to update your til for every guest ale, and they can likely be priced easily by strength, since the duty on different strengths of beer will strongly affect the price, whereas differen brewers are likely to still use similar prices to stay competitive...

One slightly lager-stained kudo do you, ma'am. Mind the crumbs.

Did the pie come with a free Mad Dog 20/20? They mistook you for a Doctor of Medicine? The lunch was a specialty of Maryland?

Or is there an MD in the pub or chain name?

What sort of pubs do you think I go to!? I am over 14, y'know...

I suspect [livejournal.com profile] cardinalsin has the rights of it with his "Meal Deal" answer, disappointingly.

POS could be "Point Of Sale" which is the name for those touch screen till entry things.

A receipt my friend obtained from a local toyshop once read something like:

TOYS
TOYS
TOYS
TOYS
MISC
TOYS
TOYS

I dread to think what their stock control looks like; this is the toyshop that spent some three months without any balloons for sale.

Glad to hear the Wai-Iti is good, I've been looking forward to this year of single-hop beers Marston's have been boasting about.

Maybe the purpose of the obfuscation is that almost everyone asking for a receipt is doing so because they're on expenses. The less your company accountant knows what you actually spent the money on, the better.
