Help me, o LJ.

Next week is the birthday of a small girl of my acquaintance. She'll be 6.

I haven't seen her in a year, and am not sure what she'd like (requests for advice from parents have not yet produced results). Last year she was all about pink stuff and craft supplies. However, shopping is a bit difficult at present, so I'm tempted by the idea of sending her money or a voucher.

If one is turning 6, what voucher would suit? Where would one wish to shop? Am I overestimating the consumer-awareness of today's kids? It was all book tokens in my day, but I don't think she's a huge reader. I'm not sure whether she has an iThing, so don't know if iTunes is the right answer.

Goodness me. I've just worked out how the rest of the world feels.

Ninety-nine times out of a hundred when I quote some kind of proverb or childhood saying, people look at me funny. They claim that instead of repeating a perfectly sensible saying, I'm spouting utter nonsense.

But today a colleague has just assured me that any injury, when he was a child, was greeted by the not-at-all-consoling remark "don't worry, there'll be a pig's foot there in the morning".

Weirdo.

And contrary to telling children rubbish about trotters to terrify them (apparently it did), we also have the truths we try to conceal from children. No, don't worry, eating pips from fruit is fine. They won't grow inside you. It can't happen. Oh, except for that guy in the US who grew a pea plant in his lung.

One of my colleagues is currently expecting a baby. I believe his girlfriend's going to do the actual producing, but he seems pretty expectant too. Said baby is due (overdue, even) so he's ready to dash out of work at a moment's notice.

I think I take it as read that any father today who's expecting to be moderately involved with a child would be present at the birth, if at all possible. I'd take it as read that any father a century ago would be as far away as he could feasibly manage from anything so out of his ken.

What I want to know is when was the watershed ? )

Or am I currently surrounded by woolly, lefty, new men who are giving me a distorted idea of the world today ?
