Last weekend, I was scooped up by [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy in his large, purry car and delivered to [livejournal.com profile] ebee's house, where there was a Tentacle party. Involving full English, cake, boardgames, more cake, more boardgames and, of course, tentacles.

And then it was just waiting until all members of our travelling party were done with their games (and blimey, can Arkham take a long time when there are people trying not only to defeat the Great Old Ones but unravel and combine their conflicting sets of house rules).

And hurrah! What a jolly nice day out. I should spend a day eating cake, drinking tea and wine, and playing board games more often :-)

Early March, you say? Doesn't that mean it's about time I wrote about the annual rapper dancing competition, DERT? Why yes, it is.

Leodensians! People of Leeds! The dance extravaganza, beer bonanza and all-round travelling circus that is DERT rolls into your city next year. See you there ;)

So... anyone got any ideas on how to bake a beer-flavoured cake?

Having been caught up in the heady excitement of my rapper team's Facebook page, I have accidentally agreed to make someone a cake "made out of beer". I have remarkably little idea of how to proceed.

A quick google suggests that recipes for chocolate and stout cake exist. My mum makes a Guinness cake, but (although it's lovely) it tastes more of fruit cake than of Guinness. I'm currently inclining towards this Spiced Beer Cake recipe - though again I'm worried that the spices (while nice) will detract from the beery flavour.

Any advice? Please note I don't want a cake that looks like a foaming tankard, or is iced to resemble a bottle... I want a cake that contains and (preferably) tastes noticeably of beer.

I need to bake my cake next Thursday (to be delivered on Friday), so not a lot of time for experimentation...

A gruesome twosome, here....

Otherly, my local butcher is getting properly into the Hallowe'en spirit, and has decorated his window. If you don't want to see the sort of window-display which could be created by someone who has a lot of spare animal body parts, I recommend you stop reading right now.

Every year, the Morris Federation underwrites the running of a rapper workshop. This year the workshop, which is tomorrow, is being taught by a team called Stone Monkey. However, for reasons that are not entirely clear to me my team are playing host to the workshop, and doing all the tedious organising and catering and so on.

Gosh, that sounds like fun! )

And on Sunday I've got an all-day practice with my own team as we try and gear up for the national competitions. Damn. Rapper's eaten my life again.
